Most likely this is because you spawned underground. One thing you could try is to type in /tp <replace this with your playername> ~ ~100 ~ ...in the chat. This teleports you up 100 blocks.

If that doesn't work, you can try either of the following:

/gamemode s

/unstuck

/ascend
