Are you a new user or maybe you bought one of our books? Here's an overview of how to get started and where to find the badges ...

Connecting to our Minecraft Server:

Users can now connect to our private Minecraft server by means of the new Server Instances Page. Your server can be accessed following these steps:
  1. Login to your LearnToMod account. Get to the Server Instances Page by clicking Play < My Server at the top of the LearnToMod Homepage.
  2. After pressing 'Start Server' button on the badge, and receiving your temporary IP address, open your Minecraft launcher.
  3. Right now, we recommend using version 1.9.2 Here's how to change your Minecraft profile to a new version. Note that any newer version (including the latest version) is not currently compatible.
  4. In your Minecraft launcher, click play, then Multiplayer, then Direct Connect.
  5. Enter the temporary IP address assigned to you. (After 10 min of inactivity you'll need to press the Start Server button again.)
  6. When you're transferred to your Minecraft world, you can start loading mods into your mod chest.

If you don't have Minecraft, that's fine. You can unlock most badges using the simulator. Just ignore any messages telling you to connect. Note: If you choose to use our Minecraft server, you will need a paid Java vanilla Minecraft launcher (for desktop or laptop computers) from minecraft.net. (Don't get it from the Windows store or anywhere else!)

About the Badge Tutorials:

At the top of the homepage is a navigation bar: click on Learn < Do Badges. This will direct you to the badge index page.

All new LTM users should complete the badges in the "Skills And Drills: Vox-L" category at the top of the page - start there.

Clicking on the "Skills And Drills" Wrench and Pencil icon will take you the index page for the category -- there will be subcategories (grey tabs in the middle of the page). Complete the badges in the "Getting Started"' section first before moving onto the "Learning to Program" badges.

The Getting Started badges will show you how to write and run your first mod. The Vox-L simulator should load automatically; if it doesn't, then simply refresh the badge page. If that doesn't work, try updating your browser or switching to a different browser

If you see an orange load code button on a badge, be sure to click it -- that will import the code you wrote in the previous badge. The mod you write should match the screencapped badge instructions exactly -- spelling, capitalization, punctuation included.

To get to the first badge in the "Learning to Program" section click on "Functions" then "Saying Hello." You can skip ahead to the next badge if you need to, though badges are meant to be completed in the order in which they're presented.

The Zoo, Magic Wands, Sidekick and JS Mini Game badges can be tackled after the Skills and Drills badges. To test all badges outside the Skills and Drills: Vox-L section, when you earn 100% completion on the badge, the badge should automatically unlock. Then you can test in Minecraft.

Having trouble running mods?

Check your mods page: https://mod.learntomod.com/programs -- Make sure your mod you're trying to run has code in it, that all your mods have main functions and delete any singleplayer / forge mods. Next, click the Account gear icon in the middle of the LearnToMod homepage and check that your MC Name matches the nickname on your Minecraft launcher. Finally, type "/op <YOUR_MINECRAFT_NAME>" into the chat area in Minecraft after you've entered your world.
